Update on season 2015/2016 Transactions at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange

The Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE) auction is on recess until 26 July 2016. Sale 30 on 21 June 2016 was the last sale prior to the recess for the season 2015/2016 which has been running since 6 October 2015. We have been closely following transactions at the auction and learning about how it works. It has been quite an interesting journey and a steep learning curve. We take advantage of this break to take stock of what has been happening in the past 9 months.

Following the launch of its website (http://nairobicoffeeexchange.co.ke/) in 2015, the Nairobi Coffee Exchange has made significant improvements in increasing transparency of market transactions. Market transactions, the auction schedule and auction catalogues are now available for download from this website. Some reports are however missing e.g. transaction listings and batting list for season 2014/2015 and prior seasons.

Sale by producers

The top 10 producers by weight bought and value offered have all been in Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Nyeri and Kiambu counties of the Mount Kenya region. Gakuyu-Ini Factory in Kirinyaga county has produced the most amount of coffee at 308, 819 Kgs but has only managed to fetch the average price of 179 USD/50 Kg. In contrast, Gatomboya Factory in Nyeri county makes it to the top 10 in value despite producing less than half (131,271 Kgs) of what Gakuyu-Ini has produced but fetching a high average price of 279 USD/50Kg. This may point to the importance of quality over quantity.

Purchases by buyers (Batting list)

We were not able to find the batting list of 2014/2015 on the NCE website. We however, found the one from 2013/2014. A comparison of the present batting list with that of 2013/2014 shows that Taylor Winch (Coffee) Ltd. and Ibero (K) Ltd. maintain the first 2 slots of the total weight bought.Sangana Commodities (K) Ltd. and Merali Dewji & Sons have beenreplaced from the top 10 list by Kenyacof and Africa Tea and Coffee. The top 10 buyers are from a pool of about 52 active buyers. The top 10 buyers have so far bought 83% of the total weight bought which is presently worth 116,534,623 USD. This is very similar to the 85% of the total weight bought worth 150,959,587 USD in 2013/2014.

County comparison

We again note the dominance of the Mt Kenya region in coffee production by noting the weight and value of Nyeri, Kiambu, Kirinyaga and Murang'a. What is interesting to note as well is the attractive average prices that non-traditional coffee producing regions of Bungoma and Nandi are fetching i.e. 211 and 216 USD/50Kg respectively.
